No, it’s not all in your head! Your brain, body and nervous systems are impacted by depression, anxiety, trauma, and other ‘mental’ health concerns. Somatic therapy addresses not just the mind, but also the body, to help you find relief and healing.
Somatic therapy is a holistic and body-centered approach to wellbeing. Soma is the Greek word for body and Psyche means mind. Thus, somatic psychotherapy is the study of this body-mind connection. Traditional approaches to mental health have focused on cognitive models of therapy, ignoring the body and its somatosensory experiences. Somatic therapy facilitates an integration between an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and somatic self.
Your body holds your story. Your thoughts, emotions, sensations, and conscious and unconscious memories shape how you move through and experience the world. Somatic therapy utilizes mindfulness, body awareness, emotional awareness, breath, resourcing and movement to help a client find regulation, safety, and change. The body expresses itself through thoughts, feelings, emotions, sensations, and tension patterns- and we address all parts of the system in a somatic session.
Have you ever had the thought “ I know better! Why can’t I change this behavior?” While paying attention to our thoughts is important, we cannot always ‘out-think’ our core issues. Having a cognitive awareness of our behaviors is an important first step- but is often not enough for lasting change. Somatic therapy looks beyond the behavior to the root of the pain. Chronic stress, unprocessed trauma, and unresolved mental health issues have a direct impact on the body and the nervous system, and thus the way we behave and operate in the world. If the body is trapped in a constant loop of fight/ flight/ or freeze a myriad of physical, mental, and emotional symptoms can arise:
Somatic therapy can be the missing link for many who are seeking lasting change. The goal of somatic therapy is to bring back balance to your nervous system, establish safety in the body, and restore both your physical and mental wellbeing.
If you’re seeking a mind-body approach to well-being, somatic therapy might be for you. Together, we can explore how to heal your past to have a more balanced present. As with all healing modalities, finding someone who feels like the best fit for you and your needs is of primary importance. If you’re thinking of exploring somatic therapy, please schedule a consultation to ensure we find the right clinician for you.
